Nutrients and herbs that are good for gut health

Posted on November 16, 2022

Maintaining gut health is extremely important. However, sometimes you still get an upset stomach, bloating or stomach cramps. We may just need to make changes to our diet, or introduce one or two nutrients or herbs that can successfully reduce pain and eliminate symptoms. Let’s see what these nutrients, herbs and vitamins are.

In order to keep our gut healthy, we need to maintain optimal immune function. Vitamin D can help us to do this, as it plays an active role in the development of a proper immune response. It is produced in the body by sunlight, but is also found in salmon, milk, dairy products and mushrooms.

Vitamin A is an antioxidant vitamin that also supports immune function and can bring relief to people with Crohn’s disease, for example. Sweet potatoes, carrots and dark leafy vegetables are rich sources.

Our bodies also need zinc. It helps to maintain healthy bones and intact tissues, but also helps the immune system to function properly. People with Crohn’s often have insufficient zinc in their bodies, so it is a good idea to eat sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds and watermelon regularly, as they contain high levels of zinc.

People with Crohn’s disease are often prescribed steroids, but this can contribute to bone loss. It is therefore essential that they keep an eye on their calcium levels. Calcium not only has the benefit of strengthening bones, but can also protect against various cancers, especially colon cancer. Milk, spinach and almonds are rich in this mineral.

Among the herbs, lemongrass is of particular importance for people suffering from Crohn’s disease, for example. The herb can help relieve the inflammation and irritation that develops and occurs during the course of the disease.

Turmeric has been used in India for thousands of years not only for cooking but also for medicinal purposes. The herb can effectively reduce inflammation in the stomach and intestinal tract.

Green tea may even play a prominent role in reducing the inflammation associated with Crohn’s disease. Some research shows that it can reduce the risk of developing colon cancer
