Herbs for sore throat

Posted on November 13, 2022

Temporary weather can be deceptive, and you can even get pneumonia on a cold summer’s morning. But don’t be scared, use herbs to relieve the pain!

The change of season is coming soon, and as the colder weather sets in, it’s important to dress in layers. Warming up on a crisp summer’s dawn can easily bring on a cold and one of its accompanying symptoms, a sore throat, which can last for days. Herbs can be of great help here too. Any of the following are excellent remedies for a sore throat.

Sage

Sage is an excellent herb for flavouring our food, but it can also be used for sore throats. Its anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial properties make it a great remedy for any throat problem. Field, garden and medicinal sage can all be used, so it is a good herb to collect and dry in late spring-early summer and late summer, and is often found in gardens. To make a cup of tea, steep 1 heaped tablespoon of sage in boiling water for 5-8 minutes, then strain. Drink 1-1 cup in the morning and evening.

Jelly rolls

Sage is used in folk medicine to treat coughs and is recommended mainly as a gargle for sore throats. To do this, boil a teaspoonful of horsetail in 2 dl of boiling water and strain after 1-2 minutes. Rinse several times a day.

Thyme

Like sage, thyme is not only used to flavour food but also to treat various ailments. Thyme tea can be an excellent remedy for a sore throat, but it is also a great bactericide, fungicide and antiseptic. For coughs and sore throats, boil 1 tablespoon of thyme in 2 dl of water. Leave to stand for 5 minutes, then strain and consume hot. If you have a coughing fit in the evening, sniff its essential oil.

Chamomile

Chamomile is a great painkiller and anti-inflammatory and can be a cure for most ailments. You can also drink its tea for sore throats or use it as a gargle. If you don’t like the taste on its own, add a little honey, which is also a great remedy for sore throats.

And what else you can use

In addition to herbs, ginger and garlic can also be helpful. To make ginger tea, grate 1 teaspoon of fresh ginger and add it to 2 dl of water. Grate a clove of garlic in a little honey and eat it.
