Gingivitis often occurs because plaque is left on the teeth, which hardens and turns to tartar. This builds up and is very dangerous because it contains a lot of bacteria that can lead to gingivitis. The tartar then starts to irritate the gums, causing inflammation and eventually even gum atrophy. Symptoms of gingivitis include pain, swelling, bleeding. In advanced, severe cases, it can even lead to tooth loss.

Gingivitis can be caused not only by poor oral hygiene, but also by other factors and certain diseases. Diabetes increases the risks significantly. Hormonal changes, certain systemic diseases, ageing, malnutrition and stress play a major role in its development.

If you notice a problem with your gums, see a dentist or periodontist immediately. Home methods can be tried, but the most important thing is to have an annual dental check-up and to practice good oral hygiene, such as regular brushing, flossing and mouthwash.

Salt water rinsing can not only prevent gingivitis, but also reduce the symptoms of gum disease once it has started. Salt has antibacterial and antiseptic properties, making it very effective in fighting mouth infections. It can also effectively reduce bleeding gums and gingivitis.

The medicinal properties of turmeric are also outstanding. Its bioactive ingredient, curcumin, has not only anti-inflammatory but also antibacterial effects. It can be used in two ways. You can either mix a little turmeric powder with water or mustard oil and apply the paste to your gums.

Ginger has antifungal and antibacterial properties. Research shows that it can be very effective in treating gingivitis. It helps to eliminate and relieve not only the inflammation but also the pain associated with gingivitis.

Baking soda is one of the best ways to maintain oral hygiene. You can either rinse with it dissolved in water or sprinkle a pinch on toothpaste and brush your teeth.

You can also use clove oil for gingivitis, as it has strong antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. It is also useful to chew a clove after a meal.
