Our body uses inflammation as a defence against various pathogens and infections. There is nothing wrong with this, as inflammation will eventually go away and doesn’t last forever, but it can become chronic and can even lead to chronic illness.
Arthritis is also mainly caused by inflammation. However, there are some vegetables that can be very effective in reducing inflammation. These include tomatoes, aubergines and peppers. Tomatoes also contain large amounts of two antioxidants – vitamin C and lycopene – both of which play a major role in reducing inflammation and helping to eliminate it.
Bell peppers can also be very useful if you suffer from arthritis, as they are rich in a compound called capsaicin, which not only reduces inflammation but also relieves pain, very effectively. Ginger, garlic and turmeric have similar effects.
Breads, pastries and pastas made from white flour are low in fibre, and a fibre diet is needed to reduce inflammation. It is therefore essential to include wholegrain foods in our diet.
If there is inflammation in the body, it is safe to forget sugar, as sugary foods only increase inflammation and are loved by cancer cells, so deprive them of their favourite food to prevent cancer.
Eating too much fatty food also promotes inflammation. To avoid this, give preference to lean meats such as fish, and vegetable proteins are also a very good alternative. Beans are high in protein.
Fish are very healthy, especially salmon, tuna and mackerel. Fish contains high levels of healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids, which are very effective in reducing inflammation throughout the body.
Lentils come in many colours and varieties and are one of the healthiest sources of protein, as well as being an active anti-inflammatory agent. Eat it regularly!
