Lavender is not only a beautiful and pleasant smelling plant, it is also a very useful plant that can be used for many things in the home.
Dried lavender is a great moth repellent and, unlike the store-bought versions, it contains no harmful chemicals. Fill small canvas bags with it and put some in cupboards and drawers – even if there is no moth danger, because it will make your clothes smell very pleasant.
A great fragrance
In aromatherapy, lavender is used to soothe and lift the mood, so after a long day at home, a little lavender scent is a good idea – put a few sprigs in a vase or make a wreath to put on the door or table.
Disinfect
Lavender oil has antibacterial properties, which is why it’s mixed into a lot of homemade and organic hand sanitisers – usually with a little aloe vera gel.
Cleans the soil
Studies have shown that planting lavender in tired soil is very useful because it absorbs heavy metals and other harmful substances without affecting the plant or the oil extracted from it.
It flavours lemonade
Crush a little lavender and sugar in a mortar and mix with water and lemon to make a purple-pink drink with a delicious taste and smell.
Helps you fall asleep
Research shows that lavender has a relaxing and calming scent, so keeping some in your bedroom in some form can help you fall asleep easier and faster. A lavender potpourri on your bedside table or a small scented pillow to put under your pillow for sleeping is a good idea.
